I am having a side project since a few years ago ( Open Lowcode framework), in parallel to my daily job. I started it at a very busy time in my life (young children).
Maybe the most important thing was finding a problem I was passionate about. Actually, I suffered every day at work from bad and expensive products, and I thought I had the skills to do better. So I just started putting effort in it. Maybe finding a problem you are passionate about should be the first step, not just creating a side project for the sake of it.
As a side effect, I almost stopped playing video games, and I do not think the time spent with my family suffered.
